BA in Linguistics from UT-Austin.

While I've been accused of collecting languages, I've really limited myself to the western European branch of the Indo-European family -- i. e. Celtic, Germanic, and Romance. The two big exceptions are Hebrew -- and, by extension, Phonecian and Ugaritic -- and Japanese.

I know this is an impressive list, but the only language I can really claim any fluency in is German. Ironicaly, I've never been to one of the German speaking countries, though I have been to England, France and Mexico.

Concerning my Journal Title

Kanzan Sato, in his book The Japanese Sword, defines the hamon as the "outline of the border between the tempered ha and the untempered metal of the rest of the blade; the temper-line." This feature, the product of the final tempering, is a distinguishing characteristic of Japanese blades. The patterns of the hamon vary according to the smith, his school, and the time period in which he is working.

I have a relevant poem about the subtitle here.

Concerning my Friends' List title

A ronin is a masterless samurai. A samurai usually became a ronin because of the death or disgrace of his lord. The most famous ronin are the 47 Ronin who advenged the death and disgrace of their lord in 1702, and Miyamoto Musashi.

The word liteally means "wave man" because the ronin was seen to be tossed around in the world as if he were on a wave, as opposed to the "stable" life of a retainer.

In the context that I'm using it, it refers to the dislocation of people today who do not have strong loyalities to nation, church, job, and sometimes even family. This dislocation can be psychological as well as literal. This, however, doesn't mean that all the people on my friends' list fit this description. It is more a label for the times we live in.
